Dental Anxiety

Do you struggle with dental anxiety? We’re here to help you feel calm and comfortable at the dentist.

Smile Solutions Level 10

Dental anxiety

The founder and managing director of Smile Solutions, Dr Kia Pajouhesh, himself suffers from extreme dental anxiety; hence his creation of a dental practice like no other, with its calm and serene environment.

We provide the reassurance you need, thanks to our fascinating coral aquarium greeting you in our entry foyer; our beautifully restored, light-filled dental suites; the soft music we play; the essential aromatherapy oils we use to neutralise typical dental odours; and the soothing powers of our burbling water features. Not to mention the caring, understanding manner of all our practitioners.

How we help you feel comfortable at Smile Solutions

  • Clear communication

We take the time to answer all your questions and explain each stage of your treatment, so you always know what to expect. You’re in control, and we’ll never rush or proceed until you’re comfortable.

  • No-rush appointments

We offer longer appointment times to ensure there’s no pressure or rushing — allowing space for breaks, conversation, and reassurance whenever you need it.

  • Flexible appointment times

Whether you prefer an early morning visit to get it over with, or a later appointment so you can ease into your day, we’ll help find a time that feels right for you.

  • A personalised care plan

For many anxious patients, we focus first on short-term oral health goals — getting you comfortable and addressing any immediate concerns — before moving into a long-term maintenance phase that’s calm and predictable.

  • Understanding and empathy

Our practice principal, Dr Kia Pajouhesh, was once a phobic dental patient himself, so he truly understands the fears and anxieties you may be experiencing. Our dental team includes carefully selected clinicians who excel in gentle, soft-touch dentistry. Hand-picked by Dr Kia based on feedback from phobic patients, internal reviews, and testimonials, these clinicians are skilled in providing compassionate, patient-focused care every step of the way.

  • Extra support where required

    – Pre-treatment oral sedation: medication such as diazepam can be prescribed by your clinician before your appointment to help you feel more relaxed.

    – Inhalation nitrous oxide sedation: a safe, gentle option during treatment to help you feel calm and comfortable.

    – Sleep dentistry and general anaesthesia: administered by specialist anaesthetists, available both in-clinic and in hospital for more complex procedures.

Practical strategies for managing dental anxiety

1

Focus on slow, regular breathing

During your dental appointment, concentrate on breathing slowly and steadily. When we feel nervous, we often hold our breath, which lowers oxygen levels and can intensify feelings of panic.
2

Use distractions to stay calm

If the sound of the drill makes you anxious, listening to music through our headphones can help. Many Smile Solutions treatment rooms also have digital screens to help you relax and lose awareness of your surroundings.
3

Avoid caffeine beforehand

Try to avoid caffeine before your appointment, as it can elevate your heart rate and contribute to increased anxiety.

Be sure to express your anxiety to your dentist, specialist or hygienist, as well as the Smile Solutions reception team when making your appointment. Knowing your concerns will help us to adapt treatment to your needs and to administer or prescribe medication if needed.

For those suffering from extreme dental anxiety, we offer two relaxation options.

1

Nitrous oxide (“happy gas”)

Nitrous oxide provides a mild level of relaxation and is a safe, common way to relieve anxiety during dental treatment. In the comfort of our calming dental suites and under the care of a trained dentist, a mix of nitrogen and oxygen is administered through a nosepiece during your procedure.
2

Oral sedation

A range of oral medications can be taken before your appointment to help relax your nerves. These are a common and convenient option and can be prescribed in advance by one of our experienced clinicians.
3

Sleep Dentistry

Sleep dentistry enables dentally anxious patients to undergo dental treatment while in the deepest state of relaxation. It’s ideal for patients with a strong dental phobia who need prolonged procedures such as treatment of multiple teeth in different locations within the mouth.
