Periodontics is the specialist field of dentistry that encompasses implant surgery, bone grafts, gum lifts, and treatment of gingivitis and periodontal disease (gum disease).

What is the role of Specialist Periodontist?
Our specialist periodontists work closely with our prosthodontists in cases requiring restorative treatments such as crowns, veneers, bridges, implants, dentures, or combinations of these.
Periodontal care typically begins with an assessment of the gum tissue. In the clinic, treatment may include removing plaque, calculus (tartar) and staining, as well as applying decay-preventing agents as required. Some patients may require more advanced periodontal treatment depending on the severity of their condition.

When should I see a periodontist?
The easiest and most effective treatment is prevention, which is the focus of our team at Smile Solutions. Dental hygiene usually begins with an assessment of your gum tissue by your general dentist. If they feel your case is more complex, they will recommend a consultation with a specialist periodontist.
Either your general dentist or periodontist will assess your periodontal condition and advise what is needed to return you to good gum health. Treatment may include removal of calculus, plaque and staining, along with tailored home-care instructions.
In most cases, this treatment can be completed by our dental hygienists. If you are also undergoing restorative or cosmetic dental work, your home-care routine will be modified and monitored throughout your treatment to achieve the best possible outcome.
Who will provide my Periodontal Treatment?
At Smile Solutions all your periodontal treatment will be carried out by one of our Dental-Board registered specialist periodontists.
To qualify as a registered specialist periodontist in Australia, practitioners must first have the same degree as a general dentist, with honours. They then study for a further three to four years for a Masters degree or equivalent specific training, making them eligible to apply for registration with the Dental Board of Australia as a specialist periodontist.

What is periodontal disease and what are the signs and symptoms?
Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is a condition that involves either inflammation of the gums (known as gingivitis) or a more chronic condition (periodontitis). Advanced cases of periodontitis can cause loss of the bone structures that support the teeth and, subsequently, loss of the teeth themselves. Periodontitis has been shown to be associated with heart disease, stroke, whole body (systemic) infections and low birth weight in premature babies.
Look out for:
- bleeding gums
- swollen gums
- redness of the gums
- painful gums
- loss of gum tone and texture
- gum recession
- bad taste
- halitosis (or bad breath)
- tooth movement and migration
- difficulty chewing.
What should I do if I have periodontal disease?
If you have periodontal disease you may be referred to a periodontist for assessment and ongoing treatment of the gums. At Smile Solutions you do not need a referral to see one of our specialist periodontists. Just call us on 13 13 96 to discuss your needs and arrange an appointment.
