Composite Bonding

What is composite bonding/veneers?

Dental bonding, also called composite bonding or composite veneers, is a cosmetic dental treatment where a tooth-coloured resin (a durable plastic material) is applied to a tooth to address chips, cracks, misalignment, unevenness, discoloration, or wear. It helps improve the size, shape, or position of one or more teeth.

Bonding is typically used for targeted corrections, while composite veneers cover the entire front surface of a tooth to create a more uniform appearance across multiple teeth. Treatments can be tailored for subtle enhancements or more noticeable changes, depending on your needs.

The most suitable option depends on your oral health and a professional assessment. Your dentist will also discuss potential risks, limitations, and alternatives to help you make an informed decision.

How could composite bonding improve your smile?

Composite bonding is a versatile and effective option for improving the aesthetics of your smile.

  • Repair small chips or cracks in the tooth
  • Masks discoloured teeth
  • Close small gaps
  • Reshape and resize teeth to make them appear more uniform and improve overall symmetry

Video features Dr Aimee Dunne (DEN0002071434) – Registered Dentist, General Registration.

This video demonstrates an example of the composite bonding process. Results and durability will vary, and your dentist will discuss suitability, alternative treatment options, and any associated risks.

Composite veneers are an elective cosmetic procedure. Suitability and outcomes differ between patients, and your dentist will also review other treatment options if appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

The longevity of composite bonding varies depending on factors such as your oral hygiene, diet, and habits like teeth grinding. Generally they can last anywhere between 4 to 10 years, though results may gradually change over time. Your dentist can advise on maintenance and when a touch-up might be needed.

Whether composite bonding is right for you depends on your teeth, your goals, and your overall oral health. The benefit of composite veneers is that the procedure often requires minimal to no tooth reduction and, after initial planning and assessment, can usually be completed in a single visit. Your dentist can assess your oral health, discuss the improvements you’d like to achieve, and explain the benefits, limitations, and alternatives so you can make an informed decision.

Composite bonding and composite veneers both use tooth-coloured resin to enhance the appearance of your teeth, but they are used in different ways. Bonding typically involves applying resin to specific areas to repair chips, gaps, or minor imperfections, while composite veneers cover the entire front surface of a tooth to create a more uniform appearance across multiple teeth.

Porcelain (ceramic) veneers are custom-made facings crafted from strong porcelain and bonded to the front of your teeth. They are highly stain-resistant and ideal for moderate to major changes, such as altering tooth shape, size, length, or texture, and covering discolouration. Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory and fitted by your dentist.

Composite veneers are made from tooth-coloured resin applied directly to the teeth. They are suitable for smaller changes, such as reshaping teeth, repairing minor chips or fractures, or closing gaps between teeth. Composite veneers can often be made and fitted in a single visit without the need for a laboratory.

Your dentist will advise which option is best based on your goals, oral health, and preferences for durability and treatment time.

Your dentist will assess your teeth, discuss the options available, and help determine whether composite or porcelain veneers are most suitable for your smile goals and oral health.

Composite veneers can often be applied in a single visit and are suitable for smaller changes, such as reshaping teeth, repairing minor chips, or closing gaps. They require less tooth preparation than porcelain veneers, but are less durable, more prone to staining or wear, and may need touch-ups more frequently.

Porcelain veneers are highly durable, stain-resistant, and ideal for moderate to major changes, such as altering tooth shape, size, length, or covering discoloration. They provide a natural, long-lasting finish but usually require multiple visits, more tooth preparation, and are generally higher in cost.

Results vary for each person.
