Specialist Periodontist Qualifications – BDSc (Birm), MClinDent (Lond), PGDipCD (Melb), MRACDS (Perio)

Dr James van den Berg graduated from Birmingham University Dental School in 1993.  He went straight into further vocational training as a general dentist in Ipswich where he stayed for the next 3 years.

Being interested in the specialist field of periodontics since his undergraduate days he applied for postgraduate education and started his further training in 1997 at Queen Mary and The Royal London Hospital Dental school.  He completed his Masters degree in Clinical Dentistry (periodontics) in 1999 and started work as a clinical lecturer in the field of periodontics at The Royal London Hospital assisting in teaching, in ongoing clinical and lab based research and in private practice limited to periodontics.

Dr James Migrated to Australia in December 2001 and started work at Smile Solutions with a practice limited to periodontics and is still there 18 years later.

Dr James completed a 2-year Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry in the field of periodontics from Melbourne University in 2012 and then was accepted into the Membership of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons in 2013.  Since 2013 he has been working as a specialist periodontist at Smile Solutions.

One of Dr James’s greatest interests is the use of Lasers in the field of Periodontics and Implants.  Dr James is the most experienced periodontist in Victoria in the use of all tissue lasers. He has utilised both hard and soft tissue lasers since 2004 and has often lectured on their use in surgical dentistry.  Dr James is very keen on continually improving his clinical skills and utilising the most up to date equipment and procedures.  He is well versed in all fields of periodontics as well as having a wide experience in the field of implant surgery.

His passions in the field of periodontics are the traditional treatment of periodontal disease, the use of lasers to aid periodontal treatment but also in their ability to enable the production of a beautiful smile through aesthetic crown lengthening procedures.  He has also placed hundreds of dental implants and has been doing so since 1999.

The use of laser technology in the treatment of peri-implant disease is a growing passion especially with the use of laser therapy in the fields of biomodultation to improve healing and reduce pain. Biomodulation is becoming increasingly more important in medicine as a whole and its use in dentistry can help reduce post-operative surgical complications and pain.
