Many people are unhappy with their smile and this can have a big impact on a their confidence. Here at Smile Solutions we see many patients who are looking for a smile makeover, whether they want whiter teeth, to straighten up crooked teeth or fill in gaps left by missing teeth.

Porcelain veneers and dental crowns are two popular options for helping people improve their smiles.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are one of the most durable dental restorations for improving the appearance and function of teeth, everything from the length, shape, proportion, surface texture, or colour and brightness of teeth, or any combination of these.

Porcelain veneers are a thin shell of porcelain that’s very powerfully bonded to the underlying tooth structure. Porcelain veneers last for a very long time, and stay looking beautiful for many years, though some people may find they reach a point where they are no longer happy with their veneers and want them renewed.

What are dental crowns?

Crowns are a solution to protect a damaged or root-treated tooth, or they can be used in conjunction with an implant to replace a missing tooth. For best results, crowns require a certain amount of underlying tooth structure so they can be firmly anchored in place. Otherwise, tooth extraction, followed by placement of an implant, is advised.

A crown, sometimes referred to as a cap, is permanently bonded to a particular tooth to improve aesthetics and function. A crown can be fitted over the remaining part of almost any prepared tooth and, if properly maintained, can last for many years.

Cosmetic dentistry

In terms of cosmetic dentistry, both porcelain veneers and dental crowns allow dentists to rebuild teeth in a very natural way. Veneers and crowns can effectively mask discoloured fillings, as well as help straighten teeth that are crooked in a minor or moderate way.

When it comes to a smile makeover the first consultation involves me asking the patients a few questions about what they don’t like about their teeth, what they do like, is there someone who’s smile they really like. All these questions can help determine what the patient is after, and then as the dentist I can discuss with them the options that will give them the smile they want, or if it’s even possible.

At Smile Solutions, we are fortunate to have a large team of experienced clinicians, including general dentists, specialists and hygienists, a number of whom can provide porcelain veneers and dental crowns.

Both long lasting and natural looking, porcelain veneers and dental crowns have allowed dentists to give patients the smile they’ve always wanted, for years. If you’re unsure whether veneers or crowns will work for you, visit your dentist for a consultation to talk through your options and which procedure is more suitable for you.
