Orthodontics is a Highly Specialised Field
We choose to provide you with optimal care by a registered specialist orthodontist when it comes to your orthodontic needs.
What Is an Orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a specialist in the field of orthodontics. These specialists focus on correcting the position of the teeth so as to improve the occlusion (bite) as well as the appearance of the jaw and face.
To qualify as a registered orthodontist in Australia, practitioners must complete a general dentistry degree followed by a three- to four-year Masters degree or equivalent training in orthodontics. Orthodontists focus solely on orthodontic treatment and correcting the position of teeth.
When seeing an orthodontist, you can be assured of receiving specialist care from a highly trained and experienced expert. You do not need a referral to have a consultation with one of Smile Solutions’ orthodontists.
Should I See an Orthodontist or a General Dentist?
While your orthodontist and general dentist can work together to help improve your overall oral health, it is important to understand the difference between the two when considering orthodontic treatment.
Orthodontists are registered dental specialists who have completed a general dentistry degree and an additional three to four years of training in orthodontics.
General dentists have completed a degree in general dentistry.
Orthodontists are experts in facial growth and dental development and can diagnose and treat crooked teeth, bad bites and poorly aligned jaws.
General dentists are experts in general dental care and dental maintenance for all ages. They can diagnose and treat problems and common diseases that affect your teeth, mouth and gums.
Orthodontists are experts in all orthodontic treatment options, including conventional braces, Invisalign and internal lingual braces – for children, teens and adults.
General dentists are not trained in attaching braces or performing other orthodontic treatments. While some general dentists may have obtained certification that allows them to carry out Invisalign treatment, they are not specialists in the field and do not have the same level of training or experience as specialist orthodontists.
At Smile Solutions your orthodontic treatment will be carried out by one of our qualified and experienced orthodontists. We still recommend that you visit your general dentist for your regular dental check-ups during orthodontic treatment.
All members of our team of specialist orthodontists are experienced in a range of procedures, from conventional braces through to internal lingual braces. When you come in for a consultation, your orthodontist, after examining your teeth and bite, will discuss with you the orthodontic treatment options that are most suitable for your needs.
Invisalign involves a series of clear aligners worn over your teeth, which move your teeth into the desired position. Invisalign aligners are removable, so they can be taken out when you’re eating, drinking and cleaning your teeth. They are nearly invisible, making them a popular orthodontic treatment option.
Visit our Invisalign Hub, which covers all elements of Invisalign treatment.
Connected by metal brackets and wires, conventional braces are the most common method for straightening teeth. The brackets are attached to the front (or cheek side) of your teeth, and the wire is progressively tightened by your orthodontist to move your teeth slowly into place.
Clear braces work like conventional braces and are just as effective, but the braces are made of a ceramic material that matches your tooth colour, with a clear wire attached to each brace. Hence they are less visible than conventional braces.
Internal Lingual Braces
Internal lingual braces are different from other types of braces, in that they are fitted to the back of your teeth (the tongue side). This option allows patients to receive orthodontic treatment without their braces being visible to anyone else.
Our internal lingual braces page has more information on this treatment option.
